An Icelandic court has ruled (Google Translate) that Icelandic payment company Valitor, (formerly VISA Iceland) must reopen the merchant services account for an Icelandic Web host that WikiLeaks uses. Valitor had previously processed donations to the organization briefly in June 2011. If the ruling stands, it could pave the way for donations worldwide to flow to WikiLeaks, which has been under a financial blockade for over a year.
If Valitor does not comply within 14 days, it faces daily fines of 800,000 Icelandic krónur (about $6,200), but the company also told Bloomberg that it would appeal the ruling. Visa has not made any public statements on the ruling so far.
According to a statement published by WikiLeaks, the “blockade stripped away over 95 percent of donations from supporters of WikiLeaks, costing the organization in excess of $20 million.”
