NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 twin-Kepler official

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 twin-Kepler official:
NVIDIA has launched its latest graphics card, the GeForce GTX 690, with twin Kepler cores making it the world’s fastest, at least for the moment. The GPU company hasn’t wasted the opportunity to make the GeForce GTX 690 look the part, either, with superlatives galore: a trivalent chromium-plated aluminum frame, thixomolded magnesium alloy fan housing, and dual vapor chambers with a nickel-plated finstack.

If you’ve not been keeping up with your Journal of Exotic Materials subscription, all you really need to know is that NVIDIA says the GeForce GTX 690 runs faster and cooler than you’d expect from a twin-GPU behemoth. Inside there are 3,072 CUDA cores, capable of almost double the frame rates of the single-GPU GTX 680, while simultaneously being more power efficient and quieter than a twin GTX 680 NVIDIA SLI setup.

There’s NVIDIA Surround support, and a new 10-phase, heavy-duty power supply with a 10-layer, 2oz copper printed circuit board and a center-mounted axial fan with optimized fin pitch and air entry angles. Finally, the company has used low-profile components along with ducted baseplate channels “for unobstructed airflow, minimizing turbulence and improving acoustic quality.”
All of the usual suspects have jumped on board to offer the dual-GPU card, with limited availability from May 3, and then broader sales from May 7. NVIDIA expects the GeForce GTX 690 to be priced at around $999.

Ivy Bridge desktop CPUs on sale online, discounts already available

Ivy Bridge desktop CPUs on sale online, discounts already available: ivy bridge microcenter

Intel’s next-generation Ivy Bridge processors for desktops are now available to order online in the US at Amazon, Newegg, and NCIX. Also, if you live near a Microcenter, the brick-and-mortar stores are offering great deals on the CPUs. For example, the 3.5GHz Core i7 3770K is going for $289.99 — $70 below the MSRP of $359.99.
The Ivy Bridge chips feature a new Tri-Gate 3D design that adds vertical silicon fins in order to increase performance and reduce energy leakage; allowing the maximum amount of current to flow through a transistor when its gate is "on," and as little as possible when it's "off." If you’ve been waiting to take advantage of the processing power and efficiency bump from Intel’s new 22-naonmeter CPUs in your...

Was RIM/Blackberry Behind The Australian “Wake Up” Protest?

Was RIM/Blackberry Behind The Australian “Wake Up” Protest?:
Last week we reported on a mysterious flash mob protest at an Apple store in Australia. With the flash mob participants all wearing black, and black buses and signs that said “wake up” people immediately looked to Samsung. We even ran this story over the weekend stating that Samsung denied any involvement in the mock protest.
Now we are hearing suggestions that RIM/Blackberry may be the culprit and not Samsung. It’s not hard to imagine that RIM/Blackberry would know that Samsung would be the scapegoat anyway. Samsung spent the entire fourth quarter of 2011 poking fun at Apple via their “Next Big Thing” campaign which even earned them a national advertising award.
In their latest marketing efforts they poked fun at Apple fans again by equating them to sheep in a teaser for the Galaxy S III. Although they haven’t had a hit smartphone in a while, we’re pretty confident that RIM/Blackberry is well aware of Samsung’s marketing tactics.
More after the break

So MacWorld did some digging into the protest campaign. The first thing they found was some source code embedded in a double-click source identifier src= 2215527, type= black 822. They reported that when you Google those numbers they point back to the official Blackberry Australia website. Hmmmm.
The second clue is that the blogger/journalist “Blunty” who posted the video that’s been circulating around the internet about the protest itself has ties to Blackberry. In fact, it’s been reported that Blunty actually worked for Blackberry.
Now here’s another rub on Blunty, in the video he states that Apple had asked him to leave the store while he was shooting video, but before he left the store he got some great shots, including a second floor shot that lasted more than 30 seconds of the protestors outside. It seems kind of suspect that he was there at the right time. He very well could have been but with being a former Blackberry employee it looks more like he was part of the event itself. The language in the video sounds a bit staged as well, but most of us brushed it off as him being Australian.
So why would RIM/Blackberry even do this? Well the Blackberry World Conference actually starts on Tuesday so it’s definitely great timing. While Blackberry doesn’t have any hot new products out right now we are expecting a re-up of the Blackberry Playbook, a 4G/LTE Blackberry Playbook and Blackberry 10 devices to be at least announced at the conference.
As phonearena suggests if it is a marketing campaign for Blackberry, they owe Samsung an apology.

Nokia in 'advanced talks' to sell Vertu for €200 million

Nokia in 'advanced talks' to sell Vertu for €200 million: Vertu store (1020)

According to a report from Financial Times today, Nokia is making progress on its bid to sell its ultra-premium cellphone subsidiary, Vertu. We first heard that the Espoo-based company retained a Goldman Sachs advisor to help it strip itself of Vertu last December, but it appears that Nokia is now much closer to striking a deal. Unnamed sources say that Vertu's suitor is private equity group Permira, which is invested in companies like Hugo Boss. While $20,000 plus gold-plated phones might not be of much interest to the tech community, Financial Times quotes a €200 million (about $265 million) figure for the sale, citing value overseas in the brand itself — not the phones. Since Vertu is bundled with Nokia, the profitability of the...

Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 announced for May 3rd: two Kepler GPUs for $999

Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 announced for May 3rd: two Kepler GPUs for $999: nvidia geforce gtx 690

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang just introduced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 in a keynote over in Shanghai, China. Designed "from the ground up to deliver the highest performance in history," this card is built in a pretty wild fashion: it's constructed using plated aluminum on the outside, with polycarbonate windows embedded in the front. It has a 10-phase power supply, integrated SLI technology connecting two GTX 680 GPUs onboard, and dual water-vapor champers sitting directly on top of them.
And Jen-Hsun gave away the very first GTX 690 that came off the production lines to the most enthusiastic fan in the crowd. That got him a pretty huge cheer.
In total, the GTX 690 has 3,072 CUDA cores, running at a 915MHz base clock and 1,019MHz boost...

The 11-inch gaming laptop lives, with the new Origin Eon 11-S

The 11-inch gaming laptop lives, with the new Origin Eon 11-S:

The 11-inch gaming laptop is the textbook definition of a niche product. In fact, up until now, there's really only been one serious entry in that category, Dell's Alienware M11x. Origin (coincidentally co-founded by some former Alienware employees) is now getting into the game, with the Eon 11-S, which the company calls a "compact high-performance laptop."

Interestingly, this new model won't actually double the number of 11-inch gaming laptops available, as the Alienware model is being quietly discontinued. That's a shame, as we liked the M11x, even if it wasn't the most practical for either serious PC gamers, or portability obsessed travellers.

Taking a bit of a shot at the current trend for slim ultrabook-style laptops, Origin CEO and co-founder Kevin Wasielewski says, "Everyone dreams of a laptop that is smaller, lighter, has a longer battery life and has the ability to play all of the latest PC games well. The EON11-S makes that dream a reality and without making any 'ultra-sacrifices.'"

The new Origin Eon 11-S will debut with... [Read more]

Outgoing Russian President presented with a Nokia Lumia 800

Outgoing Russian President presented with a Nokia Lumia 800:

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is a well-known Apple fan.

Outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is a well-known fan of Apple products, such that Steve Jobs even presented him with an iPhone when he visited Silicon Valley.
Now it seems Nokia managed to get a Nokia Windows Phone in his hands after all.
They gave journalist Ivan Zasursky the Nokia Lumia 800 and asked him if he would deliver it to the Russian politician when he met him at the last meeting of Council on Human Rights under President Dmitry.
Zasursky recounts in the
"I today gave Medvedev an Nokia with Windows. I was recently at a Nokia party and mentioned that the next week I will be meeting with the president. They asked: "Why, he only uses Apple products, offer him this telephone, please? .." I gave it to him today. I did not know if he would take it or not, but he took it " said Zasursky.
"Medvedev said at the time: ‘And they say that I only use Apple products’ "- added the journalist.
Medvedev will be leaving office on the 4th of May, so we could only say for a few days the Russian President has a Windows Phone, but hopefully we can continue converting Apple fans one person at a time.
