The New York Public Library's digital curator of performing arts Doug Reside has posted a useful guide to recovering old data from floppy discs. The guide gives suggestions and price estimates for the best methods to connect high-density, double-density, and 5.25-inch floppy discs to a new computer, and provides a walkthrough for how to properly mount the disc and create an image. After using Google to locate an emulator to run the disc image, Reside suggests using TextWrangler or Notepad to recover text files, but for other specific file types, the original software is required — but difficult to find — to view the files.
