Android users will soon be able to enjoy VLC as the team behind it releases a dedicated app this week. VLC for Android, as the app is called, took years to develop, and now needs to be tested for bugs and other issues as a beta version. It will be made available on the Google Play store for an unknown price.The VLC player is popular for supporting a wide range of file types. It spares users the inconvenience of converting files after downloading them if they are incompatible with the media player that they favor. So useful is VLC that some fans have taken into their hands the development of a similar app, such as an unofficial build by a user called adridu59 that was released a few months ago.
The official app, however offers much of the best-loved features for which the software is famous. Apart from the ability to play all known file formats, it also includes a media library of audio and video files, and enables full search within this library. It supports network streams, ARMv6, ARMv7, and ARMv7+NEON. Subtitles, both embedded and external, may be enjoyed with the VLC for Android app.
Hoping to bring ease to users of all Android-based mobile devices, it is compatible with those running at least Android 2.1, and has multi-core decoding for Cortex-A7 A9 and A15 processors and experimental hardware decoding. Lastly, users may control the app by means of gestures and headphones. VLC has worked in partnership with Asus, Dojo, and JBMM to make these features possible.
At this point, the team behind the app is still asking for help for those who are interested in making VLC for Android better. Funding is welcome as well as extra phones on which the device may be tested. Among those for which the VLC player is believed to be compatible are the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, Motorola Defy, Nexus One, and HTC Desire.
